New EU project to help create network of “green schools” in Belarus

Region:
04.07.2018

The EU has launched a new project in Belarus to assist environmental monitoring in the country through the increase of potential of “green schools” and civic engagement.

The project, entitled "Civic Engagement in Environmental Monitoring and Improving Environmental Management at the Local Level”, will focus on the creation of resource centres for “green schools”, supporting a contest of environmental initiatives and selecting 10-20 of them to be implemented in the course of four years.

The project activities will focus on involving people with disabilities in environmental quality monitoring. The state institution "Republican Rehabilitation Centre for Disabled Children" will be a pilot site for testing the "Green Schools" training programme, which has been designed for institutions of this type. It will also support the country’s Aarhus Centres, which aim to engage citizens, governments and the private sector in dialogue on environmental challenges.

The project will cover all six regions of Belarus and the city of Minsk, where environmental clubs will be established based of the "green schools” initiative, with the participation of civil society organisations. This will support the involvement of the public in air quality monitoring activities.
