Public Discussion "Learning City for Creative Economy 2.0" with the participation of belarusian and foreign experts

Belarusian and foreign experts will hold a public discussion “Learning City for Creative Economy” on 14 November at “Ў” Gallery. The discussion will consist of two parts: lectures and an interactive session for sharing experience and finding new partners.

Participants will discuss the role of culture in socio-economic development and stimulating the lifelong learning. They will explore the cases of European and Belarusian projects in the field of creative economy and learn about international experience in developing strategies for cities where certain results were achieved.

The researcher and consultant in the field of creative economics from the UK, Tom Fleming, will talk about what needs to be done to swiftly make our cities successful in their development and comfortable for life, using the tools of creative industries.

Member of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Tatyana Staritskaya will share the experience of Vitebsk, a city that has joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities.

The first part of the discussion will include of the speech by the cultural projects’ manager Alina Derevyanko, who will share the examples of creative industries in Belarus (that have been born as a result of EU-Eastern Partnership Culture and Creativity Programme). Chairman of the Cultural Heritage and Modernity foundation Alla Stashkevich will talk about the implementation of the project “Urban Strategies community-oriented development of historic cities” (COMUS) in Mstislavl.

The interactive part will be conducted in the “World cafe” format, which will allow to involve  the collective mind of all participants in the discussion and to connect representatives of different sectors. Four groups - representatives of government agencies, business, formal and non-formal education institutions and specialists from creative industries - will be able to swap their roles and try to find solutions to the challenges of each other.

The public discussion “Learning City for Creative Economy 2.0” is a part of the so named program, implemented by the Representative Office of the German Association of Peoples' Universities (DVV International) in the Republic of Belarus in cooperation with the Association for Continuing Education and Awareness, the Association for Business Education and the Social Intervention Educational Institute.

The program is implemented in 2017-2018 in two pilot cities - Vitebsk and Gomel - and aims to promote the implementation of regional sustainable development strategies for 2016-2025 through the development of intersectoral cooperation, as well as the promotion of ideas of a creative economy and the concept of a “learning city” among representatives of local authorities, educational institutions, business and civil society.
