A spotlight on opinion: New polls highlight perceptions in the Eastern partner countries

More than half (52%) of all citizens in the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood have a positive image of the European Union – a rise of 7 percentage points on the 2016 figure. Two-thirds (67%) believe that the EU’s relationship with their country is good. 54% of Eastern Neighbourhood citizens are aware of the EU’s financial support, and 50% of them believe that the support is effective. More than half (53%) of EaP citizens who are aware of EU’s financial support are also able to identify at least one specific programme financed by the EU in their country. The EU is the most trusted international institution, and the only one trusted by the majority (58%) of citizens.

These are just some of the findings of the 2019 opinion polls carried out in the six Eastern partner countries by the EU NEIGHBOURS east project.

Conducted between February and April 2019 in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, the surveys assess general perceptions of the EU, the values with which it is associated, relations between the EU and its partner countries, and awareness of the EU’s financial support and its effectiveness. They also look at citizens’ preferred sources of information, how they feel about the situation in their country and their expectations for the future.

The surveys were based on face-to-face interviews among a representative sample of 1,000 people per country. These annual surveys are now into their fourth year, the first wave having been carried out in 2016. The results from the six countries are presented in national reports and a consolidated regional overview report.

Full reports can be downloaded for each individual country, as well as a regional overview for the Eastern Partnership:
