Although international education is accessible and increasingly popular, few East European students and scholars are able to write and speak in English on academic level. However, university language teaching does not concentrate on academic purposes. This results into isolation of local academic thought: very few students and scholars publish internationally. On the other hand, English language teachers are unable to help their students as they also lack skills and tools of academic writing.
The first two Academic Writing (AW) workshops _ Klaipeda International Summer School (KISS) 2003 and 2004 were organized by Undergraduate Exchange Program alumna Rasa Antanaviciute, E.Muskie fellowship alumna Lina Zenkiene, and CEU alumna Dr. Giedre Mickunaite in Klaipeda, Lithuania. Forty five graduate students and English language teachers from the Baltic States, Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine had a possibility to deepen their knowledge while studying in a different, friendlier, and more rewarding environment.
Extensive feedback from both participants and teachers collected during and after KISS_ 03 and KISS_ 04 points to a great success of the project. The participants acknowledged that the course was relevant to their academic needs and that it helped them develop their writing skills. Great number of applicants and high evaluation of former AW summer schools urges to continue and develop this practice. Experience gained in organizing international summer schools of a kind as well as the feedback enables the organizers to improve on the level of organization, instructor recruitment, and curriculum of the next summer school on AW in 2005.
The School will host 30 participants: 15 graduate students, and 15 English language teachers from higher education institutions of the Region. AW instructors from the US universities and Central European University (Budapest, Hungary) Writing Center instructors (3 altogether) will form the teaching staff. The school's goal is to provide students with knowledge and skills that will guide their future academic efforts. Participants are selected from a pool of applicants from various higher education institutions in the Region. Application form is designed to enable a selection of the most prospective candidates. The AW training falls into the following groups: (1) lectures on AW requirements, (2) AW workshops, and (3) individual consultations. Teacher training focuses upon the preparation of teaching materials as well as building of AW instruction skills while that of the students on writing, editing, and presenting the research papers. Common morning classes are followed by separate afternoon workshops for students and teachers. Individual consultations are an important component of the program: AW instructors, assisted by language teachers, correct students_ papers and comment on them. Participants are provided with all the facilities to work on their papers (access to library, internet, computer labs, copying, etc.).
Students will acquire fundamental knowledge of AW and possess up-to-date scholarly vocabulary. They will also have their ideas articulated into a correct, qualitative paper in English.
English language teachers will have teaching materials for their further work with students. This will mark the introduction of the AW into university curriculum.
The school will build an alumni network and enhance the communication between the academia of the Region.
