39% (16/41) of those NGOs registered or reregistered for the given period are sports based. 17/23 registered in the given period as branches (or organisational structures) of NGOs, are also sports based.
Notions sports based or healthy lifestyles etc. are on the whole popular amongst Belarusians. Moreover, these ideas are among the most broadly conveyed to the population by various governmental organisations. If we consider the statistics regarding the focus of those NGOs stored on the NGO “United Way Belarus” database it can be seen, that sport is a priority for the Belarusian non-for-profit sector (19.35% of NGOs in Belarus in one way or another are oriented towards sports.) Indeed, it is 2nd only to those oriented towards: “social protection and rehabilitation”. The majority of NGOs that define their primary activity as sports based, contribute to the promotion and development of different kinds of sport including even relatively new ones for Belarus like, for example, computer sport.
Analysis of the wording of the chartered goals of these NGOs shows that the goals of many go beyond the “sports hall”, pursuing instead a variety of different initiatives. For example: the comprehensive, harmonious development of personality; the cultivation of spiritual and aesthetic upbringing; the fortification of health (not just physical but also psychological and social); moral upbringing; the assistance in the formation of favourable conditions for discovering creative potential, and optimal conditions for discovering sports based potential in different sections of society. This represents quite a lot of potential for different kinds of activity within NGOs whilst allowing those united by a shared interest in one or another kind of sport, to fully interact with their environment.
