The question referred to in the title is mostly rhetorical in as much as “extra hands” of course, never hurt anybody.
This question received 105 answers. The number of volunteers helping NGOs varies from 0-12000 people. The median number of volunteers is exactly 10, that is 10 people. If arranged in order of greatness, half the received values would lie above this value and half below. The modal number of volunteers is exactly 0. In other words, the answer most commonly encountered to the given question was “No volunteers”. Based on the results, it is possible to say that most NGOs in Belarus don’t make use of volunteers; instead they make do on their own. Moreover, the results may indicate that some NGOs are uninterested or just weakly interested in broadly attracting people to their activity. The results could also show, that NGOs don’t want, cannot or don’t have opportunities to make use of informational, marketing or other resources in order to raise the profile of their activity. The received data to the question can be grouped as follows:
- No volunteers
- Up to 10 volunteers
- 11-25 volunteers
- More than 25 volunteers
More often than not, the number of volunteers coincides with the number of organisational members. The question therefore arises whether or not NGO representatives clearly understand the difference between an NGO volunteer and an NGO member. The rights and responsibilities of a member are clearly fixed in organisational statutes. The number of volunteers is not permanent. The rights and responsibilities of the volunteer are stipulated in the volunteer agreement.
