Group spearheading formation of pro-presidential movement called Belaya Rus suggests holding founding conference in September or November
A group spearheading the formation of a nationwide pro-presidential movement called Belaya Rus (White Russia), at its meeting in Minsk on July 2, decided to suggest holding a founding conference for the movement in September or October 2007.
Attending the meeting were some 40 people, including Pyotr Prakapovich, head of the National Bank of Belarus; Mikhail Pawlaw, chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee; Mikalay Charhinets, chairman of the Committee on National Security in the upper parliamentary chamber; popular pop singer Iryna Darafeyeva; and renowned Belarusian athletes Ivan Tsikhan, Natallya Tsylinskaya and Yuliya Nestsyarenka.
Vitald Pestsis, rector of Hrodna Agricultural University, said in his speech that a group of people united by the idea of making Belarus a prosperous nation had founded a Belaya Rus association in Hrodna three years ago. «A powerful well-structured association has since been created, which has 780 grassroots cells, two city organizations and 16 district organizations, and more than 12,000 members,» he said. «We've become a reliable support for the president and governmental agencies in achieving the big goals stipulated by the guidelines of the country's social and economic development in the next few years.»
The organization has now gone beyond the limits of one region, Mr. Pestis noted.
The gathering adopted an «appeal to the compatriots,» which said: «Realizing our historic responsibility for the further fate of our people and the independent sovereign Belarusian state, and supporting the state policy of the people's president, Alyaksandr Ryhoravich Lukashenka, which is aimed at increasing the efficiency of the economy and developing the social sphere, science and culture, we, representatives of all regions and various social groups, are appealing to the citizens of Belarus to pool their efforts to help Belarus move toward further strengthening and prosperity, and establish non-governmental voluntary self-ruling national association Belaya Rus.»
