News

Dear users, in this section we present a wide range of the actual news about actvities of Belarusian National, International and Regional NGOs.

A book entitled, Raising Living Standards as Social Policy Priority, was presented to journalists in Minsk today. The publication, which treats various aspects of social policy used for raising living standards in transition economies, is intended for a broad range of readers.

The presentation was held in the framework of a joint project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Belarusian Government, “Assisting in Elaborating the Basic Foundation for a National Poverty Reduction Strategy in Belarus.”

“I hope that by looking at best achievements of neighboring countries, the book will provide a strong contribution to Belarus; it will hopefully help in avoiding mistakes made in other transition economies,” said Nataliya Yefremenko, UNDP Project Manager.

She also spoke about the goals of the project (creating a methodological foundation for social policy improvement related to poverty reduction, investigation poverty level in Belarus, etc.). The press secretary of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, Galina Trofimenko, spoke about ways in which the public can be informed about the priorities of the government’s social policy.

Participants also learned about the guidelines of social policy used in countries with economies in transition and got an opportunity to discuss various issues concerning the role of the mass media in the solution of social problems.

The “Assisting in Elaborating the Basic Foundation for a National Poverty Reduction Strategy” project serves as an initial stage in the elaboration of a national poverty strategy. It covers the majority of tasks related to this process and produces a conceptual framework for improvement in the national social policies with respect to poverty.
