There will not be Bykov’s street in Grodno.
4(421) 02.02.2004 In the nearest future no street in Grodno will be named in Vasilij Bykov honor, who had been living and working here for about a quarter of a century. Such response the initiators of immortalizing of the writer’s memory received from the City Executive Committee.
The idea to rename some street appeared in the middle of the last year in the office of Belarusian Journalists Association, then other non-governmental organizations and parties had joined it. Names of Sverdlov’s street and Lenin’s Komsomol Avenue were suggested. It was supported by more than 500 citizens’ signatures. Also initiators suggested the following actions: to open a brass on the house where Bykov lived; to organize a museum at Bykov’s working place; to open a memorial; to organize annual “Bykov readings”; to award the honorary title of Grodno citizen to Vasilij Bykov posthumously. Grodno authorities answered that renaming of the streets “is stopped meanwhile” by the toponymy commission, but Bykov’s brass will be placed in Grodno. “Other plans will be taken into consideration”.
