Nil Gilevich: Writers Do Not Want To Be Lined In Size Order

16(242) 20.04.2004 On April 15 the Writers Union council special session was held, where the written notification, rendered by the Ministry of Justice, was under consideration. In this notification the Ministry of Justice threatened the Writers Union with liquidation. The council's reaction was very emotional. Nil Gilevich declared: "Writers do not want to be lined in size order; they do not want to march in rows, to salute and so on". After all the notification points detailed discussion, the council has promised to correct some "shortcomings": to quote the writers' organization name and other. Popular poet Nill Gilevich called up everybody to preserve the civil and creative position.

16(242) 20.04.2004 Brest Fortress aspires to be included into UNESCO world heritage list. The Brest Fortress has become a symbol of the heroic fight of the Soviet people against Nazi occupants. This is a unique monument of the fortification architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1918 the historical Brest peace was signed in the fortress.

Belarusian-Language Graduates Discriminated At State Testing

16(242) 20.04.2004 Belarusian-language graduates are discriminated at state centralized testing. The Belarusian language association (TBM) stated this fact in its petition to Education Minister. The test tasks are prepared only in the Russian language. By this action, as the TBM declares, the Ministry of Education has violated a number of existing legislation articles that guarantees to the schoolchildren the equal linguistic rights in the sphere of education, specifically, Language Act article 6 and Constitution article 50.

Literary Scholar May Fall Victim to State Ideology

14(240) 06.04.2004 The Higher Attestation Commission (VAK), which grants all postgraduate degrees in Belarus, has twice rejected a doctoral thesis by Ales Pashkevich, chairman of the Belarusian Union of Writers (SBP). "The Concept of National Life in the 20th-Century Prose of Belarusian Emigre Writers", is now being examined by political scientist and historians. According to Pashkevich and other literary scholars, the VAK's reluctance to approve the dissertation is linked to a letter by six World War II veterans sent to President of Belarus and VAK Chairman Anatoly Rubinov.

Gomel Denies Registration to New Public Organizations

Gomel regional executive committee has denied registration of a new regional public association Civil Alternative. Over 200 citizens of the region stood out founders of the organization, most of them friends of the closed association Civil Initiative. The Administration of Justice delayed the official decision for about 4 months, instead of 30 days. The Board of the Civil Alternative has lodged a complaint about the denial to the regional court.

BHC Chairman Brings Action Against Belarusian TV

15(241) 13.04.2004 Minsk Pervomaisky district court has begun to consider a suit of Helsinski Committee Chairman Tatyana Protsko against the Belarusian TV and "V Centre Vnimaniya" program authors. The BHC head accuses journalists J.Prokopov and S.Homentovsky of honor, dignity and business reputation insulting. The journalists do not acknowledge their guilt.

Belarus marks international day of Nazi prisoners' liberation on April 11

15(241) 13.04.2004 On April 11 the Belarusian people marked the international day of liberation of Nazi concentration camps prisoners. According to chair of the Belarusian republican fund "Understanding and reconciliation" Valentin Gerasimov, on April 11, 1945 prisoners of the Buchenwald concentration camp rebelled. They managed to disarm the camp's guards and burst through to the attacking American troops. By the way, fund's database has about 100 former Nazi prisoners registered who are over 100 years old.
