United Way International (UWI) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to strengthen communities and improve lives around the world. It helps create new United Ways around the world and supports existing ones.
It was established in 1974 in response to growing demand of United Way organizations outsider the United States. Board members representing 9 countries, a small staff and many devoted volunteers assist member organizations in 43 countries and territories outside the US to grow and develop their service to local communities.
UWI members are independent organizations that raise and allocate funds to support a wide range of local programs and charities. By mobilizing local people and companies to give time and financial and in-kind resources, by helping local charities become more effective, United Way organizations help create long-term solutions to local human needs. Funds raised by UWI members remain in the country where United Way operates.
Globally, the United Way movement is operating to help build communities through voluntary giving and action.
