Belarus: 6 cities have sign to energy and climate covenant

Six cities in Belraus have pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 30% by 2030 under a new agreement signed on 26 October. Cities Mogilev, Klichaw, Vileyka, Sharkovshchina, Vetka and Orsja signed the Covenant of Mayors declaration during the “Fostering sustainable development in Eastern Partnership countries” conference in Armenian capital Yerevan.

They have committed to investing in energy efficiency and renewables, adopting an integrated approach to tackling mitigation and adaptation to climate change, and ensuring local authorities implement a wide variety of urban settings. According to this commitment, in the next two years the Belarusian cities will create action plans for sustainable climate and energy development.

The Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy is a bottom-up initiative  which brings together local and regional authorities voluntarily committed to implementing the EU climate and energy objectives in their territory. The overwhelming majority of Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy signatories are small to medium-sized cities, which have set themselves ambitious long-term climate and energy policies to improve the quality of life for their citizens.
