Innovation approaches to climate and energy actions discussed in Belarus

The second conference of the Covenant of Mayors East signatory cities gathered more than 100 participants in Belarus to discuss innovative approaches to climate and energy actions.

Ivan Schedrenko, an expert for the Covenant of Mayors East in Belarus and Director of Interakcia Foundation, said that more than 20 Belarusian towns will have come to the end of their Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAPs) by the end of 2018, and they are looking for different options in terms of financing the planned actions. The Covenant of Mayors East office in Belarus is going to offer the necessary assistance in accessing funding from international donors and financial organisations.

The Covenant of Mayors East is a flagship EU initiative to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 30% by 2030. It helps municipalities to prepare and implement Sustainable Energy Action Plans, reducing dependency on fossil fuels, improving the security of energy supply, and allowing them to contribute more actively to climate change mitigation.

Covenant of Mayors East is part of the EU4Energy Initiative. EU4Energy covers all EU support to improve energy supply, security and connectivity, as well as to promote energy efficiency and the use of renewables in the Eastern Partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine). It does this by financing projects and programmes that help to reform energy markets and to reduce national energy dependence and consumption. Over the long term, this makes energy supply more reliable, transparent and affordable, thus reducing energy poverty and energy bills for both citizens and the private sector.
